Swan's German guide is a wonderful tool for any beginner, or anyone wanting to refresh their memory with the German language.
It begins with the German alphabet and moves in an organized manner to phrases and terms one would need to use on a trip to a German speaking country how to book a hotel, how to ask for directions, and so on.
She gets into more complicated subjects, such as cases, later on in the book. She explains confusing concepts well, such as telling time.
Overall, a great resource especially if you're planning on traveling to Germany or just hoping to start the language.

This book is a great collection of vocabulary as well as ready-to-use sentences. It is enough to efficiently communicate in German-speaking countries and is a great option for BEGINNERS who would like to learn German at home.
On the other hand, the grammar contained in this book is very basic so I don’t recommend it for intermediate or advanced learners. I’d like this book more if there was an audio file with pronunciation of vocabulary.
It is a really pratical guide for use the german. The first part are common phrases to use in various situation, and the second part are about grammar. The approach to the german's grammatic is direct and I find it really a good summary of this language. I've found as a good book to have near to find information fast, but you should't use only it, but a great reference book.
The bad is about the missing of the pronunciation of every phrease in the book with the International Phonetic Alphabet, as many other books use it
To be a basic German course this book is really complete and has all what German learners need. The material helped me to learn more new words and is a perfect source of vocabulary and grammar. I have studied and learned from many books and this is one of them. The structure of any spontaneous conversation can be built by learning and taking notes of all the recommendations given by the writer. I'd would like to thank the author, Jenna Shawn, for her kindness, since thanks to her I got a free copy of the book. One thing I have not seen much in German language courses is the organization of German vocabulary following the noun declension according to the nature of the word, the group and the plural. I say it because that can help the learners to memorize the gender and plural forms much more easily. I recommend this book!!
I plan on visiting Germany and wanted to get a resource that taught common phrases which would help me communicate with people as I navigate the country. If you want to improve your basic literacy of the German language, this is a great book. In order to supplement the information provided, I've also been listening to audio recordings so that I can practice speaking in German and become familiar with hearing people converse in that language.

My knowledge of German is quite basic, yet I found this book really useful. I liked the format of the book - it is divided into different chapters so it is very easy to find what you are looking for. There are a lot of useful phrases covering most important situations you might find yourself in as a tourist (shopping, describing yourself, in a restaurant, hotel, bank, etc.). There is also some basic grammar with a lot of examples, all well and systematically organised. As I believe that single words have not much importance for learning a language if you do not have a proper context (otherwise we could learn a language by reading a dictionary), I only wish the author provided more examples for some vocabulary, eg. time expressions (there is a German word for morning, but not the expression "in the morning"). There are also some words which I consider quite useless (eg. different types of doctors) and I can't think of a situation in which I would need them.
However, this is a really good book if you are looking for the basics of a German language presented in an easy-to-read and systematic manner.
I’ve received a mobi.file [KINDLE] copy of this book through a giveaway the author had on LibraryThing and the following is my honest opinion.
Having taken German in college as the language, and still able to speak it from time to time when I find someone to speak it with, I found this book to be quite useful for anyone who’s seriously interested in being able to begin learning Germanspeak it, especially if they’re considering a trip to Austria or Germany.
The author begins her book by telling her readers how to pronounce the letters of the alphabet by doing it phonetically in English. The book is then broken down by categories which any visitor will find useful, with simple phrases to help them with routine requests. Unfortunately the download I got did not allow me to go from the Table of Contents directly to the section I was interested in looking at.
While the book doesn’t really help one with all the grammar of German it does fulfill its mission of giving its readers the basics of the German language. It’s a good refresher for anyone who had taken the language in school.
For opening the door of the German language to anyone interested in learning the basics of this language, I’m giving Ms. Swan 4 STARS
